Jeff Nichols often using the word "covet" for how Johnny feels about Benny, coupled with the first scene spoken about here, as Johnny offers his "kingdom" to Benny, he gets close enough to be obscured/consumed by Benny and it feels sooo transcendent the more I think about it. Fantastic work from these two. I've seen the film twice in the past week and it still is rattling around in my brain constantly.

This movie is absolutely brilliant. I loved the vibe and everything about it. The performances were fantastic, the set and sound design, the costuming, the authenticity... It's just 10/10 for me. It will become a cult classics in years to come. Jeff is a visionary director and I really dig his style of filming, although it is widely different from most theatre releases these days. I hope the movie funds its audience. Thanks for the great interview.

I think Bruce's last comment is the perfect one to end on. The first time I saw Withnail it was like gazing into Nietzsche's abyss. I lived in an absolute dive with a group of wastrels with highfalutin ideas but who weren't above casually pissing into the great mass of empty milk, wine and beer bottles we had collected outside our backdoor to save on the 30 seconds it took to reach the godawful portal to pubic hell that was our lav. One moonless Saturday night and unable to score our weekly class Cs by the usual route on account of the guy being detained by her majesty (how very dare she!), we decided to cut the tops off the next door neighbours weed, wrapped it all in foil and 'cured' it in the stove so we could smoke it. And then spent a good few weeks waiting for him to break in and cut off bits of us with his gangster machete by way of like payment.

Really interesting to listen to Jeff Nichols talk about his vision for the film, filming and writing. I didn't know him before this movie. And Tom Hardy, I guess it's the first time seeing his interviews, pleasant, genuine person. It's quite a recent thing for me to follow actors outside the movies...

“Is it possible to imagine you’ll one day make a movie that epic?” I believe he did, and twice now. But I truly appreciate the conversational and reverent tone this interviewer takes, it gives Denis a handle to explore the movie in more depth than he might get elsewhere on the press tour.
